Halla Mountain (Halla-san), Jeju-do, South Korea

Since my friend had post a preview picture of Halla Mountain last week, then I decide to let all your curiosity out by telling you more about this place.

Halla-san is a massive shield volcano which forms the bulk of Jeju Island and is often taken as representing the island itself. There is a local saying stating that "Jeju Island is Hallasan; and Hallasan is Jeju." The mountain can indeed be seen from all places on the island, but its peak is often covered in clouds.  Situated in the heart of Jeju Island, Halla-san (1,950 meters) is the highest mountain in Korea and a dormant basalt volcano. About 360 parasitic cones, or 'oreum' in the Jeju dialect, are found on the volcano’s flanks, creating a remarkable landscape. On top of the mountain is a crater lake called Baengnokdam, which is 3 kilometers in circumference and 500 meters in diameter. The landscape is beautiful throughout the year and a diverse and rare ecosystem can be found at different altitudes. As such, Mount Halla-san is a Natural Conservation Area.

Hallasan has six trails: Eorimok Trail(6.8 km), Yeongsil Trail (5.8 km), Seongpanak Trail (9.6 km), Seokgulam Trail (1.5 km), Gwaneumsa Trail (8.7 km), Donnaeko Trail (7 km), and Eoseungsaengak Trail (1.3 km). The longest trail is Seongpanak Trail which takes about 4.5 hours.
  • Eorimok Trail(어리목 탐방로) (6.8 km): Eorimok Trail Starts from Hallasan National Park’s Visitors center (altitude 970 m) and finishes at the South cliff junction (altitude 1.600 m). It takes about three hours for a one way trip.
  • Yeongsil Trail (영실 탐방로) (5.8 km): Yeongsill Trail starts from Yeongsil Management Office (altitude 1.000 m) to South cliff junction. It takes about 3 hours 15 minutes for a one way trip.
  • Seongpanak Trail (성판악 탐방로) (9.6 km): Seongpanak Trail starts from visitor center to Hallasan Baengnokdam Lake Summit. It takes about four and a half hours for a one way trip.
  • Seokgulam Trail (석굴암 탐방로) (1.5 km)
  • Gwaneumsa Trail (관음사 탐방로) (8.7 km): Gwaneumsa Trail starts from Gwaneumsa Campground to Hallasan Baengnokdam Lake Summit. It takes five hours for a one way trip.
  • Donnaeko Trail (돈내코 탐방로) (7 km): Donnaeko Trail starts from the Visitor Center(altitude 500m) to the South Cliff Junction. It takes three and a half hours for a one way trip.
  • Eoseungsaengak Trail (어승생악 탐방로) (1.3 km): Eoseungsaengak Trail starts from Hallasan National Park Visitor Center to Eoseungsaeng-oreum Summit. It takes 30minutes for a one way trip.

Hiking on Hall-san Mountain is limited to daytime hiking, and mountain entrance hours (vary by season) are strictly enforced to allow hikers to climb down the mountain before sunset.

Jusangjeolli Cliffs, Jeju-do, South Korea

If you follow the farm road 600 m to the southwest from Depo-dong, at the end of the pine tree forest is a cliff. At the base of this cliff is the Jisatgae Coast along with the imposing stone pillars.
The Jusangjeolli are stone pillars piled up along the coast and is a designated cultural monument of Jejudo Island. The Jusangjeolli was formed when the lava from Mt. Hallasan erupted into the sea of Jungmun.
They are rock pillars shaped like cubes or hexagons of various sizes and almost seem as if stonemasons had carved them out. As if carved by stonemasons, the pillars are evidence of nature’s awesome power. The administration of the district named them 'Jisatgae Rocks' from their old name 'Jisatgae'.
Its 20 m cliff makes it a popular spot for high tide, sea angling. The waves of the high tides crashing into the side of the cliff provide a breathtaking view of the ocean surrounding the pillars.
Most commonly expressed as vertical columnar jointing, the formations are created via sudden cooling of lava that shrinks in mass. The sight of waves crashing against the columns is both serene and beautiful.
